The concept of global citizenship is not new. It has appeared throughouthuman history in civilizations across the world. For example, prior to the5th century BCE, the earliest Upanishad texts of India used a Sanskritphrase, vasudhaiva kutumbakam, to describe the world as one family(Yogapedia, undated). In the western world, during the 4th century BCE, the Greekphilosopher Diogenes declared himself to be a citizen of the world. A hundredyears later, Stoic elaboration on Diogenes’s cosmopolitanism introduced conceptsof universal morality. Since then, the ways in which human societies haveorganized themselves have changed numerous times.
