According to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), in 2014, the per capita generation of municipal solid waste in the Pacific was estimated at an average of 1.3 kilograms (kg) per person per day (SPREP 2015).1 The average waste recycling rate, which refers to the amount recycled, reused, and returned in proportion to the total recyclable waste amount, was 47% while the average national waste collection coverage for the 14 countries and 8 territories was 35%. In the same year, SPREP reported over 250 temporary unregulated and open dumps in the Pacific and only 18 composting programs.
