“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.
Article One of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights remains as powerful today as it did since it was signed in 1948. Notably, it has been a catalyst for positive change in the treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTI+) people: from challenging laws that discriminate to advocating for equal treatment to the recognition of diverse gender identities. Much progress has been made in recent years. That includes the fact that the number of countries that criminalize private, consensual same-sex relationships has decreased from 113 in 1990 to 62 in 2023.1
