Responsible investment was born political, whether its origins are traced to the Quakers’ refusal to fund any enterprise that would support a slave-holding economy in the 17th century or to the anti-apartheid embargo of the 1980s.1 The notion that finance could be mobilised to obtain political outcomes, gradually promoted by financial market participants, was officially endorsed by the 2015 Paris Agreement, whose Article 2.1(c) states that achieving the objectives of the Agreement requires the redirection of global financial flows in a way that is “consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas [GHG] emissions and climate-resilient development”.
