The United States economy grew at a 6.6% annual rate in the second quarter of 2021 and at 6.3% in the first quarter. The growth in the first half of 2021, the fastest pace in 37 years, was sufficient to push the U.S. economy above its pre-pandemic level.

• Federal stimulus spending helped the economy expand at a better than 6% annualized rate in the first half of the year. However, the expiration of pandemic-era jobless benefits for more than 7.5 million people in early September will test the strength of the economic recovery.
