For over a hundred years, the idea of the "avant-garde" has been perhaps the most important and influential force in modern culture, ruling the critical assessment of the significance of an artist or a work of art. If they have been judged to be "avant-garde," then they are worthy of consideration. But very little attempt has been made to explore why the idea of the "avant-garde" carries so much authority, or how it came to do so. What is more, the term remains a difficult one to define, and is often used in a variety of ways.一百多年来，“先锋派”思想可能是现代文化中最重要、最具影响力的力量，主导着对艺术家或艺术作品重要性的批判性评估。如果他们被认为是“前卫的”，那么他们是值得考虑的。但很少有人试图探究为什么“先锋派”的概念具有如此大的权威性，或者它是如何产生的。更重要的是，这个术语仍然很难定义，并且经常以各种方式使用。
