Among the aged population (persons aged 65 and older) in the United States, the poverty rate (the percentage of individuals living in poverty, or economic hardship characterized by low income) has declined by over two-thirds in the past five decades. In 2019, approximately 8.9% of aged individuals had income below the poverty thresholds (dollar amounts used to determine poverty status). However, the number of aged poor has increased since the mid-1970s as the total number of the aged population has grown. In 2019, 4.9 million people aged 65 and older lived in poverty.
