DIYers remain fully engaged in the Home Improvement categoryThe 26th UBS Evidence Lab DIY survey of 2k+ adults (> Access Dataset) highlights arobust picture for Home Improvement (HI) demand. Specifically, 71% of respondentsexpect to do a home improvement project within the next 3 months (vs. 66% in Mar’20& 64% in Mar’19) and spend 24% more YoY on those projects to $6,800 (on avg). HDremained the top destination for materials at 31% (down -1,300 bps YoY), followed byAMZN at 20% (up 1,400 bps YoY) and LOW at 16% (down -500 bps YoY). Importantly,consumers expected to spend 4-5% more at HD and LOW YoY. Notably, "improving theaesthetics of the home" and "replace / repair a broken part" remained the top reasonsfor projects (cited by 40-50% respondents) and were largely consistent with year agolevels. However, making the house safer (+600 bps to 19%), more comfortable (+500bps to 31%), and more modern (+400 bps to 24%) were increasingly cited by owners,highlighting that demand is broad-based. Overall, the survey results indicate that HDand LOW should report strong 1Q results. Plus, there could be upside to 2Q SSSexpectations given strong category demand currently (cons. expects -3.8% SSS for HDand -9.7% SSS for LOW).
