In 1975, tangible assets comprised up to 83% ofa company’s valuation; but today up to 90% liesin intangible assets – data, intellectual property,brand, reputation and trust.1 While there is broadconsensus that data is foundational to new valuecreation in an increasingly digitized economy, thereis little consensus about how to quantify the valueof data. Data and data-driven value have a numberof unique attributes that make them different fromother types of goods or services in the economy.
As such, current economic and accountingapproaches are limited. Some new approaches arebeginning to emerge.
