The Security and Facilities Management (FM) industry has not fared as badly as expected during the COVID-19 crisis unlike some of the other cyclical sectors. The reason for its greater than expected resilience is higher margin spot activity (the provision of security guards for screening; deep cleaning & disinfection), and increased demand for temporary services within the health care, retail and banking sectors, despite lower demand from aviation. Security and FM firms have in general managed the price-wage balance well despite rising wage rates. The key issues the sector is grappling with are wage inflation & labour scarcity alongside the changing demand paterns in the altered working scenario of a post COVID-19 world.
